“Citizenship and Social Rights”
The quote that stands out to me from the reading is, “These civil rights became, for workers, an instrument for raising their social and economic status...were entitled to certain social rights”. Civil Rights were given to ordinary citizens not necessary born in the country to have political and social freedom and equality, which wasn’t that easy to obtain. People who wanted to obtain civil rights had to fight for equal rights and treatment in the United States.
The government also made it difficult to gain citizenship in the United States by requiring people to take a literacy tests to test their literacy in order to vote, which was unfair to racial minorities. Racial minorities were graded on the literary test more vigorously than whites and had difficulties answering questions on the test because the test was designed for a white person‘s educational level. People who successfully gain their citizenship felt like a member of the society and gain some sort of social status.
